NCRIS Roadmap and Investment Framework

NCRIS Investment priorities are identified in the NCRIS Roadmap  PDF Document  (189.2 KB) The Roadmap, prepared by the NCRIS Committee and released by the former Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop, in February 2006, identified sixteen priority capabilities.

The Roadmap indicated that: investment plans for nine of these capabilities would be developed in 2006; two capabilities would undergo further scoping processes during 2006 with a view to proceeding to development of an investment plan; and four would be reviewed for possible implementation in 2007.  In addition, it indicated that the Government would continue to support the development of the underpinning technological platforms that enable the research community to efficiently collect, share, analyse, store and retrieve information (through capability 5.16, Platforms for collaboration).

The release of the Roadmap was preceded by release of an Exposure Draft of the NCRIS Roadmap in November 2005. Over 190 submissions were received relating to the Exposure Draft. In addition to considering public submissions, the NCRIS Committee took account of advice provided over October-December 2005 in consultations with senior officials from State and Territory governments, universities, publicly funded research agencies and other stakeholders.

The NCRIS Committee was assisted in developing the Roadmap by four expert subcommittees. The subcommittees were structured in line with the four National Research Priorities (An Environmentally Sustainable Australia; Promoting and Maintaining Good Health; Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries; and Safeguarding Australia).

The NCRIS Investment Framework  PDF Document  (114.7 KB) was approved by the Minister and released by the NCRIS Committee in April 2006. It describes the processes to be used by DEST and the NCRIS Committee to facilitate the development of investments relating to the capability areas specified in the Roadmap.

Investment plans have been developed by Facilitators appointed by the NCRIS Committee in close consultation with the stakeholders in the respective capability areas.
